If you are traveling in an unfamiliar area or in bad weather conditions, 511 is the phone number to know for a useful tool to help you stay safe. The 511 service provides information about traveling condition on interstates, U.S. routes and state highways.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated 511 as the single travel information number in 2000. Idaho and many other states have chose to implement the optional service. The Ada County Highway District provides information about county roads and city streets in the Treasure Valley/Boise metro area.
Before 511 was implemented, there were more than 300 different telephone numbers for traveler information throughout the United States. As you might expect, remembering all of these different numbers was a challenge for the typical driver. The development of a central 511 service helps drivers more easily obtain the information they need to safely arrive at their destinations.
511 calls are treated as local calls, which means they are free from landlines. And, 511 works with most cellular phone providers, but you should contact your specific provider if you have questions about how to connect to the service.
If you are traveling near Idaho’s borders, you may be inadvertently connected to another state’s 511 when trying to access Idaho’s service. If this happens, you can call (888) 432-7623 to be connected the Idaho 511 service.
511 provides better information than the Idaho Road Report because the Idaho Road Report is only updated at certain times throughout the day. Information om the 511 service is continually updated, which means you’ll get up to the moment reports of traffic delays and potentially dangerous road conditions.
You can also access 511 information by visiting 511.idaho.gov. There are also smartphone apps that can be downloaded free of charge from the iTunes App Store and Google Play.
